What do you use it for mostly?
My circuit is acting up.....it was the initial one I bought like a hundred moons ago, and have not really got in to the buying carts
Was thinking about getting a silhouette....they can cut any font can't they? They don't need plugin bits do they?
Still thinking about it....it's a huge outlay. .....but I think it would get loved

I have the Silhouette SD. I use it to cut a lot of things for school. Mine doesn't do the 12" wide, but I haven't needed that really.

I used to have a craft robo which was the same as the silhouette. Mine only cut A4 size. I recently purchased a zing for about $A500 that uses Make the Cut software and can cut 12x12. I really enjoy using this machine. The Make the Cut software has a learning curve but it is easy to use and there are heaps of tuts and free files available.

With my Craft Robo I was limited to what I could cut. Thin and thick card was ok but cereal box cardboard wouldn't cut unless you used multi cuts and then had to sand the back of the cardboard to release the design. Bazzill card was about the extent of the thickness that it cut without a problem. Sometimes I even had to flip my designs if I was using textured card as it wouldn't cut.
With the cutter I have now, I have cut craft foam to make my own foam letters. It has cut cereal box cardboard, material and also felt with no problems.
I would suggest that you decide what you want to cut and the size of the cuts and then decide on the cutter.

I have the original Silhouette. I was worried about it not cutting 12" but I have never needed it. The software I use is Silhouette Studio which does all I need and is free.
On top of Kaz's good advice, I would say that it also depends on how computer savvy you are. If you already know PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements, then you might prefer the versatility of the Silhouette to using a cartridge-based cutter. I love being able to choose any picture (from the net, a photo I took or something I drew and scanned myself), making it into a silhouette and having the machine cut it.
I've cut bats and haunted houses, owls and birds, geckos, cutlery, as well as fancy fonts and with shadows. I've even scanned chipboard shapes so that I could resize and duplicate them elsewhere on the same LO.

I have a craft robo and also enjoy the flexibility of being able to cut any design. The only drawback I find is the blade blunts very easily. Don't know if they have improved on that with the silhouette or not.

I have the gazelle, it was out before the silhouette cameo. I have also had a craft robo and cricut in the past.
I ditched the craft robo for the cricket so I could use MTC software. (Should have waited, not long after MTC got the craft robo plug in) After the law suit, I ditched the Cricut.
For me software is the key and I like the way MTC does business. Any of the machines that work with it are good enough for me. If I were shopping today I would probably get a Cameo or Black Cat.
Proud owner of a Gazelle. Cricut free since St. Patrick's Day 2011

I have the Silhouette Cameo and I love it. The 12 x12 comes in handy for doing solid backgrounds on layouts. The newest blade system is so much better than the original. I use my Silhouette on just about every layout and mini album I create
Kerri Bradford also has some great Silhouette classes over at jessicasprague.com that are very well done.
