In 6 weeks we're driving across country to Reno, Nevada to see my Gp for Christmas. Weve made this LONNNNG trip before but we now have a dog and it looks like we'll be taking him too. Ive never traveled a long distance with a pet so give me some advise. Im looking into one of those dog car seats so he can see out the window and wont climb all over us for 3 days. Hes a small dog..only about 15 lbs. Are those pet car seats anygood? We've also talked about renting an SUV for more room. So any good advise on road trips with a dog? BTW,,we're talking a 48 hr car drive and this is if you were to drive straight through. Which we dont.

We've never bothered with the carseat, so I don't know. Our yorkie has done great, the schitzu cries and whines a lot. If they're on someone's lap, they can see out just fine. Mostly they just like a comfy place to lay and have their belly rubbed. We take a kennel for when we get out of the car, that way they don't get into trouble (aka: our snacks) when we go into a restaurant, gas station, etc.

Our puppy sleeps 90% of the time he is in the car. We stop every 2-3 hours for a potty break but he doesn't get the concept yet that that is what we are stopping for - he just likes to sniff around. He's never made a mess in the car yet though - although the longest we have taken him in the vehicle is a 5 hour trip.

I dont know if I want a 15 lb dog on my lap for 3 days...I dont LOVE him that much..lol and hes too short to see out the window on his own so we thought it would keep him from climbing all over us...he "can" be a pest. Thought about the kennel thing too since we dont have one. Then we have to make sure the hotels we stay at take dogs.

my vet used to suggest 1/2 a Dramamine .... cheaper than what he could / would prescribe and it calmed 'em down. You'd have to ask how much for the weight of your dog of course.

We have an SUV with a gate between the cargo area and the back seat. Both of our labs can ride back there. They both love to ride, and with the gate we don't need to worry about them getting into anything in the car.

I took our pug to San Diego, but that's only 12 hrs 1 way.. not X country. I take a water dish & bottled water, a couple leashes & plan out stops. If he gets var sick you might ask your vet about dramine the should give you a dose based on size/weight. I didn't use a pet seat as he happily lays on the kids lap or the front pass seat.
Good luck!
