He got his acceptance letter to Ivy Tech yesterday, along with his student ID. I told him he will now get the college discounts, lol! The coffee shop down from the studio will give him 10% off and I know other places will, too! Donald kept calling him Doogie Howser, lol!

That's great! What is he going to study there?

They offered that while I was going through HS, but they don't anymore. We called it 'career center.' It was basically a trade school. I think they should still offer it.

For us college starts at 16 or 18. What age range is high school for you? Is it like our secondary school which is age 11 to 16 (GCSEs) or 18 (A levels)?

A high school diploma means you've fulfilled the credit requirements. This can vary by state (a minimum set) and district (meets the state but some may require more credits. Our state has 19 credits total - with certain requirements in certain subjects. My district has 26.) Kids typically graduate between ages 17- 18 (sometimes 19) depending on where their birthday falls and the cutoff for enrollment. (I graduated at 17 but my daughter will be 18 even though we both have October birthdays - 12 days apart.) Some kids graduate at 16 because they took more courses earlier and fulfilled the requirements early. (I know of a sister and brother a year apart but graduated the same year because one had fulfilled the requirements to graduate.)

College after high school means typically kids are 18 or 19. But some start taking college courses during high school.

Community colleges are 2 year institutions that offer Associates (2 yr) degrees as well as some certificate programs and 'community education' which are evening classes is various subjects. Sometimes these classes/credits will transfer to a 4 year college/university (where you go for a Bachelor's degree) but it depends on the classes, what the 4 year will accept, and also whether or not they have a transfer program set up with other colleges.

ETA: high school is typically grades 9 - 12, though some areas might include 9th grade as part of middle/junior high. 9th graders are typically about 15 years old (give or take)

What is a GSCE, O levels, and A levels?

I've heard of the second two in the Pilcher novels I've read.

I dont know about Indiana but in Ohio if you take college courses in high school the cost is covered by the school.

In our district the kids have to be honor roll kids to enroll in the post-secondary program.

GCSE = General Certificate of Secondary Education. They study for those from age 14-16, take exams at 16. They replaced O.levels, or Ordinary Levels in 1988. The government's aim is for all kids to leave school with a pass in English and maths at least.
From there they either go on the dole, get a job, or go to college, or go on to do their
A.Levels = Advanced Levels which are still in use. They study for those from age 16-18, take exams at 18.
Then they can leave school and get a job, or go on to university, or college.

There will always be kids who are not quite those ages. Some take them a year early if they are really bright or late if they have had illness that holds them back.
