Do you talk to your kids about what's been happening around our country with all the violent crimes? Do you let them watch coverage of these types of tragedies? What if anything do you talk about in regards to this subject? My girls are very clueless and I wonder if they will hear about this and how I should approach the subject should it come up.

I have always loved what Mr. Rogers had to say about things like this.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mothers’ words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world." - Mr. Rogers

Yes the good outweighs the bad.

We did discuss it with Lillianne and Camille. They are at the age where their friends will be talking about it at school. Actually Lillianne heard about it on the bus ride home today.

Abbigaile got a lot more hugs and kisses then normal today from her sisters.

I told her as soon as she came home from school. She's 10, and she'll find out about it flipping channels, on the bus, or at school. I'd rather talk about it with her. I explained that schools are a very safe place to be for children, this is tragic, people do horrible things sometimes.

I turned off or muted the TV while the reports were coming in and Jenna was in and out of my room as we were getting ready for DH's graduation. I will be talking with her about it. Tonight she is sleeping at my sister's house and I had a hard time letting her go. Extra kisses/extra hugs. I do hope when my students arrive on Monday, that I'm guided to how to respond to questions and conversations they'll be having. I won't be bringing it up, but I know some of my students will know about it.

I don't watch the news, I get it on the internet, so my kids are not even exposed to the stuff. and no, I don't feel like they need to know about how messed up the world is. they will find out later.

My friends son is 12. They watched it on the news and talked about it. She asked him if he knew what to do in a situation like that. He explained in detail what he is supposed to do. She asked him how he knew all that and he told her that his school has drills. She said fire drills? He told her not only do they have fire/tornado/disaster drills. They also have drills for if someone like a shooter or someone else comes into the school. She was really surprised..

We did talk to both boys and used it as a learning process. We did nit go into gory details; but we explained that we never know when we will go to heaven, we need to be nice and kind to one another, we need to be aware of our surroundings and pray for our world and our family. Also that their school and school personnel are doing everything they can to be safe.

I know we've had lockdown drills every year I've been a teacher. Fire drill 1x/month and earthquake drill 1x/year.

yup, that's why I need to talk about it with Jenna. She and Char are very much the same. I think more than anything, Jenna will worry about the teachers who were killed saving their classes, especially since they were in younger grades. It is truly sad, the whole thing.
