Do you have a certain amount of $$ to spend? Or anything goes? Or a certain # of presents? Or what?

well this year we are keeping it simple.
we actually got a lego set from a friend for free... yeah!
we are planning on getting him some hockey nets (mini) and maybe 1 or 2 other small gifts.... we also have a hockey puzzle and 2 hockey books.
plus his stocking, so even with that said it will still be lots... I can see hubby finding a way to get him new hockey gloves or elbow pads but we'll see as christmas gets closer.

Every year is different, so anything goes. I'm trying to make a few gifts this year. The girls love it when I do.

We have been really careful this year (well last year too) because some things are in limbo at the moment. I would give anything in the world to spoil him rotten though.

Every year I make a concerted effort to keep it under control. And every year I fail. I do pretty good at the beginning, but then even after I'm "done" shopping I still see things I really want to get them, LOL! Bought some more today. Then of course if I buy something else for DD I have to get something else for DS....

The good thing is that about half of it is things they need. Like DD is getting lots of new pajamas and hoodies because hers are all way to small. DS will get some clothes too.

I do keep the amount of money pretty even between the kids. Everything DS wants is uber-expensive and DD wants stuff like games and Barbie dolls. So her pile is a lot bigger but DS is old enough to get that.

I contribute to a Christmas club every year and ALL our shopping has to be within that limit. That includes Christmas cards and Char's birthday, which is December 7th. I try to keep the amount within reason for Char. This year she is getting a lot of clothes and no big gifts so the amount of gifts is more but the money is less.

feels like an odd year, as we're blending families for the first time and (thankfully) have kids the same age....

But our buying habits are different. Not necessarily in what we've spent in the past; but I'm more of a quantity buyer and Mark tends to get just two or three big ticket items. I just love watching the kids open gifts & hate for it to be over with so quickly - LOL

So I'm attempting a compromise and having given Britt & Jav their baby crib Thanksgiving weekend, certainly helps that. I'm looking forward to having all of them here together that day!

we have the 4 gift rule, and then little stuff in the stocking - and spend $100 or less on each person (well, us adults are not so good at sticking to that budget for each other LOL, I know dh spend twice that on me already)

we stopped giving gifts to extended family, except for a little something for our parents -a family portrait in a frame is usually what they get.

SIL either gives us lists for the kids, or buys things and we give her the money. Right now I have a big plastic bag full, waiting for me to wrap for them.

I would love to spoil mine rotten as well but in reality we just can't and he's got a roof over his head, clothes to wear, food to eat and parents who love him!

It's not good to spoil rotten anyway. Notice the word 'rotten' in that? You don't want to end up with a Veruca Salt.
Kids need to learn to appreciate what they have and can't have everything they want.

This year dd wants quality over quantity a big ticket item rather than lots of small

DS wants everything that has ever been on a tv commercial.

This year is very hard for us dollar wise. We have never been in this position before.

Now that mine are older, it really depends on them. Son generally wants one or two big ticket items, and daughter generally want several smaller $$ items. So we get a list from them and depending on the cost of everything, we put a dollar amount and let them decide the order of importance for their gifts and go from their based on what we can afford.
We also tend to buy little extras for the real surprises, plus stuffers.

My son has an excel spreadsheet he emails to hubby. What he wants, most important in bold, color coded, price range, notes, etc.

My daughter, OTOH, has a hard time coming up with stuff and her list is book series (manga).
