What do you call it, and when do you usually eat it? Supper--around 6-ish. Used to be 5-ish.

when I was growing up, we called it supper. Not sure when I switched to calling it dinner
and we usually have it sometime between 5 & 6:30, depending on what time of the year and what we have planned.

Tea. We always have. Breakfast, dinner and tea.
If I'm with people other than immediate family, I call the midday meal "lunch" and the evening meal "dinner". But to me "dinner" in the evenings is only a hot meal out, not cheese-on-toast at home.

When I was growing up we called it supper. Now we call it dinner. My parents still call it supper.
We normally eat between 5-6pm.

Dinner.
Anywhere from 6:30 (on the rare rare rare early nights) to 8:30. Later than that, I get grumpy.

Oh sorry, I forgot to say we eat whenever DH gets home. I prepare everything, he calls me as he goes to leave and I start cooking it. That could be anything between 6 and 8 in the evening.

Mmmmm, I used to have cheese on toast done under the broiler every night for my late supper when I lived at home with my Mom and Dad (We called it 'cheese dreams', not sure why???
We eat 'Supper' here around 5:30.

Growing up it was supper, but somewhere along the way I picked up 'dinner'. Sometimes I try to call it supper to get back to my 'roots'.
On a similar note, I grew up calling the living room the parlor.

Rosey - i thought Tea was a 4:00 snack before a late dinner. (Geesh my rural roots are showing).
Supper is usually on weekends, dinner through the week. I grew up in a small town and we had supper every night, got married moved to the city and we had dinner! I think it is the cook's choice. Dinner or supper used to be 7:30 now it is around 6:30.
ETA: Just realized we have supper at the cottage if it is just hubby and I.

Dinner here. We eat anywhere from 6 - 7.30pm It depends on the kids activities and DH's roster.
When I was growing up on the farm it was called tea but when we moved to the city everyone called it dinner. So it got changed.

It is to some people, not to us. And to some of my friends, supper is just hot chocolate and cookies before bed.
I suppose dinner is the main meal of the day, so if you eat a big meal at midday, that's dinner. Tea is just a small meal to keep you going before you go to bed. Supper is if you need a top-up!

Reading Rosamunde Pilcher's books it could get a little confusing. A lot of times they gave the kids their tea and the adults would have supper later. I just figured tea would be the regular early evening meal and supper was if you ate late.

So is high tea a formal meal or something else? I do understand dinner as the main meal at noon or in the evening. Supper is a lighter meal later in the day. I think Tam may have discovered my confusion about tea - I do read alot. LOL

I'm Southern, and Southern I'll stay.
I fight "lunch" all the time.
DH likes it at about 5, I grew up having it at 8. We originally compromised at 5:30-6, now it is 6-6:30
