For material things I always tell him less knowing full well that he'll see it when the bill comes in, he knows to add about double lol For important things like a pet care bill I would not only tell the truth immediately but would fight tooth a nail if he said no to a procedure that can save the animal. In my eyes, you get a pet, you are responsible for its well being.
